Wisdom Teeth Extraction & Sedation| Seaforth Oral Surgery, Montreal

What are wisdom teeth & Why Would They Require Extractions?

Wisdom teeth are your third molars, which can be found at the back of your mouth. They often appear during your late teens to mid twenties, since this is the age when you should have gained ‘wisdom’. Wisdom teeth are, most often, the last teeth to erupt, once your 28 regular teeth have already erupted past the gum lines in your upper and lower jaws.

Wisdom teeth can be problematic if they fail to “erupt” properly. This can happen when they develop crooked, underneath your gum lines, or push up against other teeth. This can cause discomfort, infection, and even cysts. Wisdom teeth are also harder to clean, increasing the chances of eventually developing cavities and decay.

For these reasons, we recommend you have your teeth examined by an oral and maxillofacial surgeon. After careful inspection, they can suggest a treatment plan (if necessary) to ensure the best possible outcome. At Seaforth Oral Surgery in Montreal, our dentists and maxillofacial surgeons may suggest either extracting wisdom teeth or re-evaluating them on a yearly basis, if they are not causing any problems.

However, it’s important to maintain good oral hygiene to keep your teeth clean. This includes brushing and flossing your teeth, paying special attention to your back molars, and having them regularly examined. During a consultation at our dental office, located in Montreal, a professional X-ray can expose the health of your wisdom teeth.
